This hand-painted community mural on canvas was created by artist Tammy Barnes as part of the Forever Fearless exhibition in Washington, DC. This community engagement activity invited exhibit visitors to engage directly in the creative process—centering connection and shared storytelling.   The community canvas honors the courage and resilience of women and girls who show up—for themselves, for each other, and for the generations walking beside and after them. Set against the backdrop of the U.S. Capitol, three figures—a grandmother, mother, and daughter—gather together, each holding a sign that speaks to their hopes, rights, and futures.   The mother stands at the center—both literally and symbolically—bridging the generation that came before and the one just beginning to find its voice. Her role reflects the lived experience of many first- and second-generation women: grounded in the history and sacrifice of their elders while pushing forward for progress. The grandmother, seated in a wheelchair, gently holds her daughter’s arm—not out of dependence, but in recognition and support of the woman she’s become. The granddaughter, bike at her side, represents forward motion—a future carried by both memory and momentum.   With its bold colors and powerful message, Fearless Generations is a tribute to advocacy, family, and the everyday acts of courage that help move us all forward.
