Breaking Bread by Ali Syverson
acrylic on canvas, cradled in handmade wooden frame
30 x 48 in
Breaking Bread celebrates the vibrancy and traditions of cultures around the world and the special act of sitting down, sharing a meal, and telling stories with strangers and friends alike. With our government taking an increasingly isolationist role in the world, it is more important than ever to spend time with people that can help us diversify our thinking, celebrate different cultures, and engage in joyful, shared rituals. The choice of folks attending this dinner party is intentional. There is, of course, a dark history of the U.S. government systematically targeting and erasing populations all over the world. This painting depicts a few of these populations seated at the shared table– with their cultures and cuisines shown prominently and with dignity.
