RUN ME BACK MY SNAP by Blu Murphy

RUN ME MY SNAP BACK is a visual declaration of the frustration, resilience, and righteous anger felt within many urban Black communities as SNAP benefits continue to be treated like a political chess piece rather than a human necessity. This work confronts the systemic games played with people’s survival, especially the survival of children. At the heart of the piece is London, a young girl who stands in both protest and action — pulling, reclaiming, and snatching back what belongs to her community. She becomes a symbol of every child who has ever been caught in the crossfire of political debates about food, access, and dignity. The imagery intentionally echoes the legacy of the Black Panther Party’s Free Food Program, a revolutionary act of care that later inspired the free lunch programs in today’s public schools. That lineage matters. It reminds us that community-led nourishment has always been an act of resistance and love. This piece is a visual love letter to the Black community — to every family that has had to stretch benefits, to every student in a redlined neighborhood who has been hungry for equality, opportunity, and simple nourishment. It is what I wish I could have done for every child I’ve taught: protect their access, pull back what was taken, and insist on their right to be cared for. “RUN ME MY SNAP BACK” demands more than food. It demands justice.
